| 摘要 | This thesis discusses how the artists Mark Tobey and Agnes Martin used Buddhism as a source for their interpretations of reality and how they transferred such philosophy to their canvases. Although their work varies greatly in style, this thesis suggests that the artists were addressing the same issue: what is reality? Their canvases do not represent true reality; they are illusions through which one is encouraged to explore one's personal interpretation of reality. The thesis begins with a presentation of certain aspects of Buddhist philosophy which can be associated with abstract paintings and then specifically applies such theories to the works of Tobey and Martin. Intermingled in the discussion is information about the artists' lives, especially as influenced by Buddhism. Primary sources, including a telephone interview with Martin, were used as resources. Bibliography and color illustrations of representative works by each artist are included |
