| 摘要 | Why are Westerners drawn to Tibetan Buddhism as a spiritual practice? An interview protocol was administered to four practitioners at a 10-day meditation retreat. Spiritually-oriented experiences of childhood, more recent events leading to the respondents' interest in Tibetan Buddhism, and their deeply-felt reactions to these events were probed. The writer, who was also involved in the retreat, acted as a participant-observer and used a phenomenological approach to analyze the interview data. This analysis is viewed through Metzner's metaphoric terms and compared to ten views of transformation. The four Westerners had each been studying and practicing Buddhism for at least seven years. Travel and friends influenced their earlier outlooks; birth, death, yoga, illness, dreams, drugs, contact with a teacher were of later spiritual significance. The lasting effects of their contact with Tibetan Buddhism include realization of the importance of spiritual practice, release of attachments, acceptance of death and impermanence, and feelings of unity with the universe. For these four people, Tibetan Buddhism promotes self-awareness, integrates practice with understanding, and balances elements of the body, speech and mind. The potential for growth on many levels from the practice of Tibetan Buddhism is what appeals to these Westerners. |
