| 摘要 | The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the intra-Buddhist conflict over the phenomenal self, highlighting the contextual frameworks of the various Buddhist schools in their interpretation of anatta and noting to what extent those contexts reflected the intention and methodology of the Buddha. By determining this context, and the underlying participatory frameworks which arise within each context, some understanding of the difficulties between Theravada Buddhism and Christianity in regard to the phenomenal self was established as parallel to some of the difficulties between this former school and other Buddhist schools. Chapter One served as an introduction, establishing the extent of the difficulty of dialogue between Theravadin Buddhism and Christianity on a conceptual, doctrinal level, but also on the more primary levels of participatory framework. (As Appendix C points out, this framework could be seen as parallel to Sallie McFague's "model."). Chapter Two established the context of the Buddha, both his own religio-political and socio-economic milieu and the intention and methodology of his teachings. His context was found to be intensely soteriological, with his teachings to be seen as heuristic tools for active participation rather than for philosophical explanation. Chapter Three examined four prominent Buddhist schools' treatment of anatta and the extent to which their interpretations of anatta reflected a soteriological or philosophical emphasis. Chapter Four pointed out dynamics within the intra-Buddhist conflict which were parallel to problematic dynamics within inter-religious dialogue between Theravada Buddhists and Christians. These dynamics covered both the dynamics of variant frameworks, those being unifocal overagainst bifocal descriptions of phenomenality, and the difference between soteriological and philosophical contexts. Chapter Five suggested a tool called participatory constructs for facilitating dialogue with other faiths and disciplines. This approach emphasizes contextual understanding of soteriological concern. This chapter also showed how dialogue, through recognition of the proper contextual understanding, can revitalize the soteriological message contained within a tradition for its own adherents and also enable mutual transformation between traditions. Also within this chapter was discussed how dialogue can rescue a tradition's message from dulling, discursive abstraction and (re)root it in the everyday life of human existence. |
