| 摘要 | It is often said the Gautama Buddha anticipated the theory of self and personal identity as propounded by David Hume. The present work points out that this continuity becomes more clear when we consider the concept of self in the light of the notion of cause. The Sautrantika school of Buddhism seems to provide the closest Buddhist counterpart to Hume's view. Both Hume and the Sautrantika initiate an ontology of momentary particulars rather than eternal universals and a philosophy of mental states rather than substances. Mind is only a bundle or series of perceptions. The problem is with the missing string which could really make it a true bundle. Both Hume and the Sautrantika try to supply the missing string by appealing to the so-called notion of causal relation. The Hume-Sautrantika view analyses cause as a mere conjunction of events without any objective bond of necessity. There is, however, a sense in which 'necessity' can be accommodated in this view. Hume's account of the origin of 'necessity in terms of new impression' and the Sautrantike 'necessity in succession' complement each other. The Hume-Sautrantika attempt to build a philosophy of mind on causal foundations faces some major philosophical problems. I try to defend the view by saying that the Sautrantika and Hume do not just deny self or mind; they only deny a certain kind of 'mind', mind as an agent or identical self; in the same way they refuse to accept a certain analysis of cause. Though causation is intellectually implausible, the fact that such a relation is psychologically inevitable is questioned by neither Hume nor by the Sautrantika. For the Sautrantika, the causal law governs all phenomena; for Hume causal association is the 'cement of the universe'. |
