| 摘要 | The recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969,Samuel Beckett is one of the most influential twentieth-century writers. His application of anti-conventional technique in drama reveals the existential plight of human beings in the universe. Violating the conventions of the traditional drama, giving up logic and consistency of structure, language and plot,Beckett leads drama into a new era. His famous work,Waiting for Godot,is ascribed to the theatre of the absurd. It not only discloses the absurdity of human existence, but also reveals the modernist aura of pain, nothingness, forlornness and anxiety caused mainly by the World Wars. To confront the plight of human situation is also a major concern of Eastern thought. Buddhism depends on humanistic thought to deal with humanlife such as the so-called suffering and emptiness. In this thesis, my research will be focused on suffering and emptiness. In order to illustrate this viewpoint,I will analyze Existentialism in terms of its background and tenets, and the differences between the existentialists and the absurd playwrights in writing style. Besides, I further compare two fundamental concepts in Buddhism -- suffering and emptiness -- with Beckett's Waiting for Godot which reveals pain and nothingness in characters, stage, language and structure. In Chapter Two,I would like to discuss the characters' suffering and forlornness both on physical and mental levels. All characters in Godot are old tramps who suffer from afflictions and illusions. In this play, there are only pain, habit, memory, forgetfulness; however, nothing happens. Memory is painful so the characters try to forget their past. Waiting is suffering when their expectation,Godot, doesn't show up. Waiting has become a habit which is an adaptation to the meaninglessness of life. How to escape suffering through Buddhism is my concern. In Chapter Three,my focus will be placed on time which brings nothingness. The flow of time doesn't bring hope and salvation, but frustration and void. Beckett is fond of the sentence,"Nothing is more real than Nothing". In Buddhism,"Real emptiness is not empty; it is wonderful existence. Wonderful existence does not exist; it is real emptiness". I will explore the similarities and differences between Godot and Buddhism in "emptiness". In Conclusion,I will analyze and comment on Waiting for Godot and Buddhism both in suffering and emptiness as well as their similarities and differences for the purpose of inspiring man's deep understanding about life. |
