| 摘要 | In the funeral rites of the Thai Yuan (the Thai of the North) in the Fang area of Northern Thailand orthodox Buddhism and ancestral beliefs find a perfect harmony. Death is a moment of solidarity for the whole village and an occasion to celebrate a great feast in honour of the deceased. All these rites are to facilitate a good rebirth of the dead person who is believed to be dangerous to the living before having reached a new existence. Described are (1) the different rites related to a natural death by old age or sickness (rites just after death, the funeral vigil and procession, rites at cremation and after cremation); (2) rites related to a violent death, caused by drawning, killing, or road accident, in order to neutralize any evil influence from the souls of such persons; (3) rites related to death caused by childbirth being a most horrible one, especially before delivery; (4) the solemn cremation of a monk, a great feast for the whole village which puts an end to the long mourning. |
