| 摘要 | This paper examines the Buddha as teacher as seen in the canonical scriptures of Theravāda Buddhism, focusing on the manner of his relation to various interlocutors. As satthā to a ranked community responding to his teaching, he gives sasanā rooted in the truth of his own mastery in anattā. The term "satthā" is applied only to him. He is perceived as an authoritative teacher who gives order to the common life, but his authority derives from the purity of his detachment from the energies of ordinary life. The power he exerts in his community is not only exemplary but also expressive: he initiates the enablement of release from ignorant desire. Some respond to him only by adopting a less overtly passionate life still predicated on rebirth, but others, attaining an 'eye for truth,' pursue the higher path leading to full excellence. The Buddha's authority rests in the mere force of his presence and in pathfarers' gratitude for the help they receive in his path toward overcoming their suffering. He is master of a variety of means of instruction, as appropriate to monks, laity and ordinary folk; to those with varying needs on the higher path, on the lower path, on no path at all, and to those following another teacher. At times the text shows him consciously using words with a sense of their dual meaning in higher path/lower path perspectives, aware that his interlocutors understand only the lower path perspective but setting the stage for them to progress toward nibbana. In each case he combines flexibility and order, authority and freedom, based in his own mastery and in his freedom in means. His beneficial effect in his community authenticates the Buddha as teacher. |
