| 摘要 | One of the major differences between Thai Buddhists and Thai Muslims is religion. Religion has shown some influences on human behavior. It shapes their perspectives toward the world. Religion is used as the guideline to set up the social norm and expectation. The religious philosophy has much impact on communication patterns. It influences human perception and social values. Many customs and traditions are derived from religious teaching. Thai Muslims tend to be more restricted to their religion than Thai Buddhists do. The rigid beliefs in Islamic philosophy lead Thai Muslims to unite and keep on protecting their own tradition. Social evolution is slow for them. Thai Muslims in the southern part of Thailand, who call themselves 'Thai Malay', have more restriction in conserving their tradition and custom than Thai Muslims in other parts of the country. Thai Buddhists are more flexible in terms of beliefs. There are many levels of interpretation in following the Buddha's teachings. Thai Buddhists' social structure seems to be loose and emphasizes on individualism. Buddhism and Islam show people the ways of behaving in order to obtain a happy life. However, for Thai Buddhists, the origin of man is unknown, no eternal God, all things including life are transitory and being a human is suffering since no one can escape from the cycle of life and death. These concepts do not appear in Islam. Islam put an emphasis on Allah. Allah is God who has strongest power and commands the Muslims to follow his teachings. Allah creates them to enjoy being a human and determines their future. Relative to family planning, Thai Buddhists are found having more positive attitude toward this notion. They adapted modern family planning methods more than Thai Muslims. So far, the family planning program in Thailand seems to be successful in Thai Buddhist communities. Thai Muslims preferred to use the traditional methods in their family planning practice. Thai Muslims tend to be too conservative and rigid to adopt the innovations. They prefer to learn Islamic philosophy to secular subjects. Therefore, the general knowledge and level of secular education is rather low among Thai Muslims. This fact leads to the conclusion that it narrows their view in accepting and adopting any kind of innovations. This study demonstrates the culture and value differences between Thai Muslims and Thai Buddhists. It also analyzes the influences of their religions on behavior patterns in general, communication behavior, social structure, as well as family planning adoption. |
