| 摘要 | The self-concept of Japanese American and White American fourth through sixth grade children was measured using a modification of the Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale. This study centered upon comparisons between the two ethnic groups with special interest in the physical self-concept. Since the major focus of the research dealt with the physical dimension, nine additional items dealing with the physical self-concept which were thought to be especially sensitive to Japanese American populations were developed and used with the original Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale. The second major focus of the study was to compare the self-concept of the two Japanese American religious groups. Two religious groups were sampled, Buddhists and Methodists. The Buddhist Church is a traditional Japanese religious community, whereas the Methodist Church has its origins in Christianity. All data were analyzed through the use of analysis of variance techniques. Findings revealed significant differences between the 29 Japanese American and 47 White American children on three physical self-concept scores: (1) the physical self-concept of the original Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale, (2) the physical self-concept as measured by the nine added items, and (3) the combined physical score. The Japanese American children scored significantly lower than the White American children on all three physical scores. Significant results were also found between the 19 Buddhist and 10 Methodist Japanese American children. The Japanese American Methodist students scored significantly lower than the Japanese American Buddhist children on the physical self-concept score of the original Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale. The major finding of this study was that the physical self-concept of the Japanese American children was not as positive as the physical self-concept of the White American sample. The physical self-concept of the Japanese American children may have been lower because as a visibly different ethnic minority group, they may have encountered prejudicial and negative attitudes about their ethnicity. |
