| 摘要 | This article considers Liu Tsung-yüan's (773-819) basic views on Confucian doctrine and their historical implications. The paper starts with a close scrutiny of Liu's conception of the Confucian Way (Tao). The key finding is that Liu's Confucian Way is the Way of the mundane world, with its particular emphasis on its being the Way of the public realm of human life. It seems that Liu's ideas in this respect did not represent any major breakthrough in T'ang intellectual history, because since the early fourth century Chinese literati had generally regarded Confucianism as dealing mainly with matters concerning sociopolitical and family orders, whereas personal cultivation and metaphysical issues fell into the Taoist and Buddhist domain. In addition, through a comparison of Liu's thought to those of other contemporary Confucian thinkers, this work modifies the conventional view that the mid-T'ang Confucian revival led by Han Yü (768-824) and Liu Tsung-yüan was a precursor of Sung Neo-Confucianism. It suggests that the mid-T'ang Confucian movement was essentially a revival of an old form of Confucianism and that Liu's was a powerful voice expressing this sentiment. However, some new elements, particularly certain ideas held by Han Yü and his followers, emerged in this revival and finally paved the way for the burgeoning of Neo-Confucian metaphysical and moral philosophy. |
