| 摘要 | Many recent researches on the topic of religious conversion in Taiwan were done mainly on Christian groups or only on the Buddhist laypersons. The aim of this research is to capture the whole conversion process of the Buddhism nuns, to verify any stages present and to prove whether the stages in this empirical investigation were compatible to those as postulated in the Stage Model conversion theory of Rambo (1993). In-depth interview was conducted to gather data for analysis. The original data gathered (and transcribed into Mandarin Chinese) was then translated into English at a latter date. Both conceptual analysis and relational analysis were applied to the data gathered. There were two coders to do this task, in order to achieve validity. In the findings, the stage model of the conversion process of Rambo and Farhadian (1991) is proved true in this empirical investigation. The seven stages were present in the conversion of the participants to nuns and sometimes with the characteristic of a spiraling effect as postulated by the scholars. However, the sequence listed by the stage model is true for the minority only. There are another three combinations of stage sequence found in this investigation. The findings of the participants’ motivation structures also supported Seymour Epstein’s (1985) model of motivation. Andrew Greeley (1972) emphasizes that while meaning functions is primary to the conversion, but the belonging functions may be prior to meaning in terms of chronology which is not true in this investigation as only one participants’ belonging function is prior to her search for the meaning function. |
