| 摘要 | The most remarkable feature of this historical moment on Earth is not that we are on the way to destroying the world – we've actually been on the way for quite a while. It is that we are beginning to wake up, as from a millennia-long sleep, to a whole new relationship to our world, to ourselves and each other. —Joanna Macy The proposed workshop will introduce participants to the hybrid blend of Buddhist teachings, living systems theory, and deep ecology that inform the celebrated teachings on the environment of Joanna Macy. The subtitle of the workshop is “Work that Reconnects: An Introduction to Joanna Macy’s Exercises for Promoting Buddhist Ecological Practices in Your Own Community.” The workshop will demonstrate three simple exercises – the systems game, open sentences, and the Council of All Beings – that participants may bring back to their own communities to inspire and awaken an awareness of human’s deep belonging to the Earth, and the importance of caring for the Earth just as we do our own precious human bodies. Last August, I undertook a ten-day intensive training session with Joanna in Soquel, California. Since that time, I have integrated her exercises into my courses on Women and the Environment, Ecofeminism, and Women and Buddhism at the University of Toledo. I have presented these practices to my two practice groups during our days of mindfulness and have discussed their use at two international conferences on sustainability. The workshop begins with a brief biography of the development of Joanna’s work on the environment: her early affiliation with the Buddhist Sri Lankan philanthropic organization Sarvodaya in the early 1980’s; her work at Syracuse University on Systems Theory and Buddhist Studies that culminated in her dissertation, Mutual Causality in Buddhism and General Systems; her work with Tibetan monks and nuns in exile in Northern India; and, finally, the development of her Nuclear Guardianship program with Fran Macy in the United States and in post-Chernobyl Ukraine and Russia. My emphasis will be on the ways that Joanna’s work draws from diverse teachings, schools, and lineages within Buddhism to create a distinctive ecological philosophy that integrates the Buddha’s teachings in ways that Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike can understand and use in their own communities. In the main part of the workshop, I will introduce participants to three exercises that are designed to reconnect us to our essential belonging with the Earth: the systems game, open sentences, and the Council of All Beings. After receiving instructions on a specially prepared handout, participants will have a chance to play the systems game and open sentences and will learn about ways they can successfully adapt the Council of All Beings to their own programs or classes. The workshop will conclude with questions and discussion, especially as they relate to ways of adapting these exercises to maximize accessibility for diverse audiences. In some cases, modifying explicitly Buddhist terminology may be a helpful strategy, for example, when dealing with conservative non-Buddhist communities. Games such as the systems game may also take different forms in order to promote the participation of those with mobility disabilities. |
