| 摘要 | The concept of “mindfulness,” which is integral to Buddhist practice, enables a dancer to stay focused on the present moment. The awareness is essential for understanding the nature of dance in Asia. Dance forms practiced along the path of Buddhist transmission in the Near East, Middle East, and Asia have been culturally influenced by this mindful, spiritual state. For this workshop, I have selected six countries to exemplify mindful Asian dance: India, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Korea, and Japan. Mindful Asian dance begins in India, where it was shaped by Buddhist and Hindu practice. As Buddhism spread to other countries, mindfulness became integrated into various cultural forms. Javanese dance is an example of mindful Asian dance, influenced by both Hinduism and Buddhism. Similarly, as Thai dance developed, it was inspired by ancient traditions of movement in Mon/Hmong, Khmer, and Srivijayan dance, as well as by Hinduism and Buddhism. Classical dance in China during the Tang Dynasty and in Korea were also shaped by Buddhist cultural influences from northern China and Central Asia. Dance forms in Japan, the last country along the Buddhist path, were also influenced by Buddhism, which was transmitted both by sea and by land. This workshop attempts to introduce mindful Asian dance from the perspective of cultural forces received along the Buddhist path, influences that were essential in creating the classical Asian celebration of free will, joy, and inspiration. Mindful of these qualities, even today the performance of dance in all these countries integrate the calm and spiritual attitudes of Buddhist meditation that are essential to Asian dance. |
