| 摘要 | This paper concerns my personal journey of integrating Amidism with my desire to work to relieve suffering in the world. It is one story of how Amidism fosters and supports socially engaged Buddhism. I wanted to help relieve suffering and, at the same time, realized that “helping,” in the commonly understood sense of the word, often did more harm then good. This is why, nearly 12 years ago, I became a nun. I knew I needed training and that, despite my experience in community work and academic study of psychology, I had much to learn. Amidism is a school of Mahayana Buddhism, which was taught by Nagarjuna. The school is based on the teachings found in the Pure Land sutras, which were propagated by Shan Tao in China, later developed by Honen and Shinran in Japan, and now starting to penetrate the West. After several years as a student of this school, I joined the Amida community based in Newcastle (U.K.) in 1998. I ordained as an Amitarya, a follower of Amida (Amitabha) in their Amida Centre in France that summer. I took bodhisattva vows that incorporate celibacy, making me a nun in the Amida order. I have 237 vows that govern the whole of my life. These are not quite the traditional bhikshuni vows, as they have been adapted to modern life and its demands and dilemmas. I took Reverend Dharmavidya as my teacher in Amida’s “monastery without walls.” This paper will discuss ten years of my work as a socially engaged Buddhist. In Zambia, a country rife with HIV/AIDS, I worked sharing the Dharma and offering the gift of “non-fear.” In Bosnia, I worked with members of different faiths dealing with the psychological wounds of war. In India, I worked with volunteers who teach English as a foreign language and with very poor children who were affected by the tsunami in Tamil Nadu. Currently I am based in the U.K., linking different Buddhist networks, including Sakyadhita U.K., the Network of Engaged Buddhists, and the European Buddhist Union, where I head the committee for youth and am currently recording secretary. I speak as a working-class woman who was very ignorant about world issues and life in other countries, with many misconceptions and prejudices. My experiences opened my eyes to the complex issues facing people in each country. Despite the different problems people face, the Buddhist teachings have much to offer and are well received around the world. |
