摘要
Within the development of contemporary society, not only Tibetan laywomen, but also Tibetan nuns are faced with challenges imposed by social changes. An in-depth look at the Yachen Nunnery in Kham (eastern Tibetan area) provides evidence to illustrate many of the challenges that exist for contemporary Tibetan nuns. Based primarily on interviews with the nuns themselves, this article will discuss the living conditions of nuns, the limitations of religious education, and contemporary conditions for women’s religious practice. Minimal documentation exists in Tibetan to detail the lives of Buddhist women practitioners. The pursuit of further authentic research – with the goal of meaningful contributions to local, regional, and global awareness and understanding of female Tibetan Buddhists, past and present – is important to enable positive changes in the monastic education system for contemporary Tibetan Buddhist women.
In this article, I will point out that if present conditions, women’s status, and the level of religious education are to change, it is important that the nuns themselves become aware of and challenge the larger socio-economic environment, the system of monastic education, and their own level of motivation.
