東風西漸 -- 文化全球化面臨之衝突與融合 -- 以台灣法鼓山推廣禪文化為研究案例=Eastern Culture''s Journey to the West: Explaining Cultural Conflicts and Integrations under Globalization using Taiwan DDM''s Promotion of "Chan" Value in the West as a Case Study
This research looked at the culture issue in the globalizing world. It especially focused on the conflicts and integrations arisen when Eastern cultural values meet the West. Many past researches concluded that cultural differences and/or cultural hegemony was the underlying cause of conflicts among countries in the world. To name a few, “The Clash of Civilizations ” theory of Samuel P. Huntington,“Orientalism”of Edward W. Said and the more recent “Empire” theory. Other researches also propose that globalization could bring about a “mutual learning” process between cultures and/or form a hybrid global culture. For example, Du Weiming, Marc Crepon. Recently, “Chan ” and/or“meditation”cultural practice has gradually become a fashion in the West. This makes it a good case study of cross-cultural conflicts and integration between the East and the West. In Taiwan, a well-known Buddhist organization－ the “Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM)” has for the past decade been devoting itself in promoting the Eastern “Chan” value and practice in the world. This research intended to find out the possible source of East-West cultural conflicts and integration, as well as the possible solutions/strategies people may adopt to resolve the conflicts via studying the DDM case. It further examined the applicability of many cultural theories to this case. Finally, this research proposed that Chan, an important oriental value, has the potential to become a new world mainstream culture which fits the psychological needs of people in this rapidly globalizing world.
