In the period of Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, with a large number of Buddhism monasteries and followers from different strata, Buddhism culture was flourishing in Chaoshan area. Consequently, Buddhism played a significant role in the then society. From the angles of religious sociology and cultural anthropology, this article, based on the researches of former scholars, discusses briefly Buddhism s social functions with the help of the data from cultural heritage and stone carving materials.
