Based on the physical and mental experiences of Tibetan Buddhists in the process of making physical movements and for the purpose of helping people in Taiwan better understand Tibetan Buddhism, this study proposes a religious view in which the follower’s body is the religious subject. The physical experience that accompanies visualization for Tibetan Buddhists should not be hidden behind a veil of mysticism because it is a way for Tibetan Buddhists to personally practice and experience the inner essence and logic of Tibetan Buddhism on the basis of the body-as-subject. The understanding of the physical movements comes from the follower’s own experiences and feelings. The follower not only needs to understand the significance of these movements using different channels, but must also feel the different changes of their own mind and consciousness using their own actual experience of the movement and visualization. The basic symbolic level of these movements is perhaps the worship of the understanding of merit. Tibetan Buddhists constantly cultivate their own reverent mind and practice through the combination of visualization and physical movements to bring about a state of mind of stability and concentration. This paper starts out from the perspective of the performer of the action, with the subject as the “followers” in this Center for Buddhist Studies, using the two research methods of “experience participation” and “interview” to explore how the followers of Tibetan Buddhism display the basic principles of the religion in their own physical structure using various bodily movements. With these bodily techniques, the followers use multiple senses to experience the symbolic layers in their religion and display Buddhism’s cosmogony and teachings through the method of perception. |
