| 摘要 | This is a clear and comprehensive guide to the main aspects of Tibetan culture and religion. It is accurate and well sourced, covering a vast array of subject matter while remaining concise and accessible. The book begins with pre-Buddhist myths and religion. Then the introduction of the Dharma into Tibet contextualizes Tibetan Buddhism and its development into the four main sects. In an overview of a vast array of subjects, we get glimpses into some of the most profound aspects of Tibetan Buddhist belief, including explanations of Tantra, mandalas and the bardo states between death and rebirth. The divine and blessed beings are introduced clearly and unromantically, and the author keeps to the point -- the aim of the Tibetan Buddhist is to develop compassion, subdue the ego and develop a realization of emptiness. We are also introduced to the most famous lamas, monasteries, rites and festivals, rituals and their objects, sacred dance, offerings and the Wheel of Life. Milarepa and his poetry make a swift appearance along with dakinis, wrathful deities, Bon deities, exorcists and healers. The book is vividly illustrated with relevant photos and paintings, indeed is almost over-decorated with texture, pattern and symbols on every page. The layout is arranged to make the book feel entertaining and inspiring, with additional information on each topic presented in boxes so that the main articles are kept focused. It is a very well-organized volume, leading the reader through a wide range of complex subjects; but each chapter stands alone if dipped into, and cross-references are provided in the text without interrupting the flow. Geshe Thubten Jinpa says it is 'like being led through a vast and complex terrain by an experienced guide'. He would recommend this book as a good introduction on the subject without hesitation. So would I. |
