| 摘要 | This study investigates the history, myth and physical reality of the Jokhang in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. This Buddhist temple is the most important and very likely the oldest Buddhist building in Tibet. The events explaining its founding are largely mythical and remain factually uncertain. This study will attempt to clarify the motives and events that relate to the founding of the building itself and to the legendary 'history' of the building that developed later. Using various archaeological, architectural and artistic investigations this study will examine the structure of the building and its decorative program. Through a series of comparisons it will attempt to establish the foreign precedents from which the building and decorative style stem. Through the use of various scholarly works, this study will analyze the political history of the Yarlung king, Songtsen Gampo, to show the specific political realities of the Tibetan rulers during the temple's founding. This will explain the essentially Nepalese character of the building. A further investigation of the Jokhang's later history and the central place it came to occupy in Tibetan culture will reveal the unique cultural significance of the temple and help to explain the highly structured cultural perception that surrounds it. Additional research into the nature of Tibetan historiography will show the overtly religious and political nature of the Jokhang founding myth and Tibetan history in general. The Jokhang myth, which seems to negate physical and historical evidence, is a later construct that reflects the central religious and political position that the Jokhang occupies in Tibetan culture. |
