bell hooks, originally known as Gloria Watkins grew up in a southern blue collar family, teaches in the City University of New York. Witnessed the sexism and racism in society of her childhood, bell hooks was motivated to become a feminist and she devoted herself being an advocate for the freedom equality of Blacks. During college, bell hooks was exposed to Paulo Freire’s critical theory and Thich Nhat Hanh’s philosophy of engaged Buddhism. In addition to the trend of feminist and multiculturalism at that time, the paradigm of segregation school affected hooks to form her own pedagogy as well as her teaching practice. hooks started her feminism pedagogy in the classroom, and later she proposed engaged pedagogy as the praxis of her teaching strategy. So, the key points from theory of engaged pedagogy are: First based on the marginalized experience hooks had, the patriarchal ideology from criticizing the education system, which also reflected the authority that traditional teachers have on the teaching strategy and on the relationship between themselves and their students. Secondly, “engaged pedagogy” emphasize on a relationship based on mutual recognition in the teachers and their disciples. The intersubjectivity dialogue and the transformative mechanism of empowerment between teachers and students encourage students establishing a critic consciousness to voice and discover and help the disciples to trace back the process and context of self learning and then stimulating the desire for knowledge as well as defining the true meaning of learning for themselves. By using education as the practice of freedom, everybody will be truly self-actualized.
