Buddhism, which was introduced into China from India and transformed into "Chinese Buddhism" by Buddhist monks in China, has become a very important part of traditional Chinese culture. Although it is not an environmental philosophy, Buddhism is imbued with profound ideas of environmental philosophy. This paper expounds the following ideas: the life outlook that " all living creatures are in possession of Buddhist character" ; the idea of achieving complete unity of life and environment in absolute accordance with what is right; the value of harmony of man nature from which "the golden mean of the Confucian School" originated; the idea of environmental ethics that "all living creatures are equal"; the idea of striving for a harmonious society called "a pure land imbued with Buddhism;. A discussion of all these ideas is of great practial or immediate significance for research into environmental philosophy.
