Based on all the land-mark historical facts recorded in Biography of Eminent Monks, this paper explains the internal laws on the progress of the initial worship of Buddhism in China and draws tentative conclusions from three different aspects which include historical periods, places and events. On the ground of this, the author points out that there are three stages on which Buddhism came to be worshiped from the second century to the fourth century. The author hopes this paper, which attempts to free itself from the ever-haunting disputes on when and where the earliest Buddhism was introduced into China, will benefit the study of the earlier history of Buddhism in China.
