| 摘要 | Although Buddhist temple stays are becoming popular, and there are many introductions to Korean Buddhist temple culture, books explaining the symbolism of Korean Buddhist temples are few. With this in mind, this book, which includes both beautiful photographs and detailed explanations, should be welcomed by foreigners looking to acquire a deeper understanding of Korean Buddhist temple culture. The various decorative motifs, statuary and halls not only convey the Buddhist spiritual world and worldview, but are also visual representations of the religious aspirations of those who seek the Buddhist path. This book also deals with spatial symbolism such as the arrangements of structures or images of the Buddha. Heo Gyun, the author of this book, has sought to find the symbolic meaning of various temple decorative items, personally visiting some 250 temples nationwide over the past five years or so. He received a Ph. D. in Korean Art History at Hongik University and is currently working as the Head Researcher of Korean Folk Art Research. Timothy V. Atkinson, the translator of this book, graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a BA in Korean Studies in 1981 and has lived in Korea for 26 years. He translated this book on the basis of his deep study of Korean Buddhist culture. |
