| 摘要 | This dissertation represents a comparison of the critique of Buddhism as set forth in the interpretations of Sankara, Madhva, and Ramanuja to the sutras of the second section (adhyaya) of the Brahma-sutras concerned with the refutation of Buddhism, with the positions actually elaborated by the Buddhists in their own texts. For Sankara and Madhva, this section includes Brahma-sutra II.2.18-32; for Ramanuja it includes Brahma-sutra II.2.17-30. An attempt is also made in this dissertation to compare the conflicting interpretations of the three commentators to these particular sutras, in accordance with the philosophical approach unique to each commentator, namely, unqualified non-dualism (nirvisesadvaita) in the case of Sankara, qualified non-dualism (visistadvaita) in the case of Ramanuja, and dualism (dvaita) in the case of Madhva. The polemics that characterized the relationship of Buddhism and the traditions of Vedanta and the various Vedantic schools with each other are analyzed from a historical and philosophical perspective as revealed in the commentaries to these particular sutras. The dissertation is divided into two parts. The first part consists of an Introductory Background. It includes a brief description of the Brahma-sutras as a text and summarizes the philosophical positions of the three commentators. It includes a study of the positions of the four major schools of Buddhism (the Sarvastivadins, the Sautrantikas, the Vijnanavadins, and Madhyamikas) and syncretistic schools such as the Buddhist logicians towards questions raised in the Brahma-sutras in connection with topics such as the atom, causality, momentariness, the cessations (nirodha), space (akasa). This first part also includes a study of Sankara's supposed "crypto"-Buddhism as evidenced by his relationship with the school of Gaudapada and in his approach towards the two truths (the practical and the absolute) and nescience (avidya). The second part of the dissertation proceeds sutra by sutra to study the three commentators' interpretations of the particular sutras of the Brahma-sutras directed againt the Buddhists. Each commentator's interpretation is analyzed, compared with the actual positions set forth in the Buddhist texts as studied in the Introductory Background, and is compared with the interpretations of the other two commentators. |
