| 摘要 | Arnold Toynbee once suggested that future historians will conclude that the most significant event of our age was the introduction of Buddhism to the West. The nascent dialogue between the Buddhist meditative and the Western psychotherapeutic traditions has arguably been the most important aspect of this historic encounter, yielding suggestive insights about human development, psychopathology and cure (Engler, 1983, 1984).And yet, despite the fertile possibilities for cross-pollination, mutual enrichment has been impeded because both traditions have been slow to recognize and utilize the other's discoveries. Intellectual commerce has tended--with rare exceptions--to be solely one-directional: writers have emphasized Buddhism's importance or psychotherapy (e.g., Boss, 1965; Chogyam, 1983; Deatherage, 1975) while neglecting psychotherapy's value for meditation. Both traditions have a great deal of merit, but neither provides a complete picture of human nature. Each offers a valuable and incomplete perspective--neglecting indispensable elements included in the other. Meditation could teach psychoanalysis that there are possibilities for emotional health and well-being that far exceed the limits described by psychoanalytic models, while psychoanalysis could help Buddhist's understand some of the unconscious interferences to meditation practice and the growth process. |
