| 摘要 | This dissertation attempts to expose and clarify the interpretations of a crucial but little understood body of commentarial literature on Mahayana Buddhism's central scripture, the Prajnaparamita or Perfection of Wisdom, and on the renowned commentary on this scripture, the Abhisamayalamkara (or, the A.A.). The interpretations to be exposed and clarified concern the first two major topics of the A.A.--the Motivating Thought (Skt. citta-utpada, Tib. sems-bskyed) and the Instructions (Skt. avavada, Tib. gdams-nag) and folios 35 to 160 of the Pancavimsatisahasrika prajnaparamita (or, the P.P.). These interpretations belong to commentaries entitled the Sphutartha by Haribhadra, the ses-rab-kyi pha-rol-tu phyin-pai man-nag-gi bstan-bcos mnon-par rtogs-pai rgyan-gyi 'grel-ba don gsal 'bai rnam-bsad snin-poi rgyan.by rGyal-tshab dar-ma-rin-chen (hereafter called rGyal-tshab), and the bsTan-bcos mnon-par rtogs-pai rgyan 'grel-pa dan bcas-pai rnam-bsad rnam-pa gnis-kyi dka'-bai gnad gsal-bar byed-pa, legs-bsad skal-bzan klu-dban-gi rol mtsho by rJe-btsun chos-kyi rgyal-mtshan. Part One, the Introduction of this dissertation, has the following purposes: (a) briefly summarize the history and philosophy of our texts and writers and the attempts of modern writers to translate and interpret these into English; (b) expose the problems in understanding the interpretations of the commentaries and formulate a comprehensive interpretive approach for attaining an understanding; (c) review the general method used by the author for studying these texts. Part Two attempts to expose and clarify our commentators' interpretations of the Motivating Thought (Skt. citta-utpada Tib. sems-bskyed) by employing the approach developed in Part One. It explores the conventional definitional characteristics of the Motivating Thought and examines the treatment ostensibly given the Motivating Thought by Specific passages in the P.P. Part Three attempts to expose and clarify our commetators' interpretations of the Instructions (Skt. avavada, Tib. gdams-nag): it is divided into ten chapters corresponding with its ten subtopics. In each chapter, we explore the definitional characteristics of the Instructions and examine the treatment ostensibly given these by specific passages in the P.P. The appendices contain the original source materials for this dissertation. These include the author's composite edition of the commentaries by rGyal-tshab dar-ma rin-chen, Haribhadra, and Maitreya, his edition of rJe-btsun chos-kyi rgyal-mtshan's Don-bdun-cu, and the appropriate folios of the P.P. The research for this dissertation was conducted in India, Japan, and the U.S. In India, research was conducted at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; the Tibetan Institute for Higher Studies, Sarnath; the Tibetan Monastery, Bodhgaya; Sera-Che Monastery, Mysore; Gyud-med Monastery, Mysore; and the Tibetan Archives, Dharamsala. In Japan, the author consulted scholars and archives in Tokyo and Kyoto. In the United States, he worked under the guidance of Professor G. L. Sopa at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. |
