| 摘要 | In recent decades, the people of the world have focused much attention on development and modernization. However, development, or modernization, is a multifarious process that proceeds at various levels. The present research advances a general model of development and investigates one element in the model--Thai people's views on human development. The implications of these views for one higher-level social institution, the education system in Thailand, and for development in Thailand in general are then discussed. Buddhism plays an important role in the daily lives of the Thai people and provides the philosophical foundation for the people's views on human development. Thus, before the author extracted a People's Theory of human development, he first derived a Buddhist Theory of human development by means of a content analysis of selected Buddhist literature. Then, to ascertain people's views, an interview schedule, based on the derived Buddhist Theory, was drawn up and administered to selected groups of Thai Buddhists. To determine what educational practices Thai educators subscribe to, a questionnaire was administered to Thai primary and secondary school teachers, and various documents were analyzed. The findings of this study show that there is much in Buddhist Theory and the People's Theory that can be used to promote desirable development in Thailand. Many of the "modern" reforms now being attempted in the education system are supported by both Buddhist Theory and the People's Theory. For example, the perceived need by education officials to encourage students to "think for themselves" is supported by the Buddhist Theory's injunction to prove things for oneself and never take matters on faith alone. In other spheres, the findings indicate that a lack of development cannot be attributed to the religious values or beliefs held by the people. The findings indicate that Buddhist Theory can be used to promote economic development and that People's Theory does not lead to passivity. Thailand's failure to achieve development goals probably stems from other factors or combinations of factors rather than people's views on human development or the belief system (Buddhism) that provides the philosophical foundation for those views. |
