| 摘要 | Santi Asoke is a new controversial Buddhist group in Thailand. Santi Asoke monks and nuns are strict vegetarians, they eat only one meal a day, they walk barefoot, they refuse to take money donations, and they lead a simple life in austere conditions. They encourage laypeople to work hard and live modestly, recycle goods, practice natural agriculture and observe the Buddhist moral precepts strictly. Santi Asoke was banned in 1989 and its leader Bodhiraksa was forcibly disrobed. A court case commenced against Bodhiraksa and Santi Asoke in 1989, and six years later they received a suspended sentence of two years. Santi Asoke Buddhism and Thai State Response analyses the conflict between Santi Asoke and the Thai state by studying the relationship between Buddhism and politics in Thailand, and the differences between Santi Asoke and mainstream Buddhism. This is the first study based on extensive fieldwork in the Santi Asoke in Bangkok, and in the other Asoke temples in Thailand, with interviews of monks, nuns and laypeople. This study presents statistics concerning the social background, education and social values of Santi Asoke members. The author studies in detail the Buddhist ideas and practices of Santi Asoke and compares them with mainstream Buddhist practices. The author concludes that the reasons for banning Santi Asoke were political rather than doctrinal, as the ideas and practices of Santi Asoke do not radically deviate from those of other respected Thai monks and monasteries. The author suggests that the rapid socio-economic changes in Thailand, industrialisation and urbanisation, will bring about changes even in the Buddhist thinking, and the state Buddhist administration will gradually have to accept the Santi Asoke group and its Buddhist teaching and practice. |
