| 摘要 | Monasticism in both Buddhist and Christian traditions provides one of the most divergent and refined patterns of organized religious life in the history of religions. Consequently there is a great deal of literature that explores monasticism. However, that literature is predominately hagiographical or theological. These accounts of monasticism present only part of the picture and need to be balanced by social scientific and academic studies. This thesis seeks to contribute to the study of monasticism by means of a case study approach. Beginning with the contemporary American anthropologist Melford Spiro's theoretical assumptions, I add my observations based upon case studies of two monastic institutions: one Son Buddhist and the other Roman Catholic. Mine is a cross-cultural study for no study of monasticism is complete without examining and comparing its manifestations within different religious traditions. On the basis of my comparative case studies, I conclude that monasticism is an "alternative way of life" to secular, worldly norms. This conclusion is presented as a corrective to the views of many modern scholars who simply view monasticism as pessimistic, world denying and otherworldly. |
