| 摘要 | Using the life of one Buddhist nun as a prism, I examine the emerging religious and social service role of Thai Buddhist nuns. These nuns, who usually have had a very low status and little, if any, power, now take a valuable role in addressing problems related to women's spiritual development, unemployment, lack of educational opportunities, and to the growth of a prostitution industry. Rather than putting aside their religious, especially contemplative concerns to work on these problems, these women use the insight gained in (as well as the status gained from) contemplation to play a greater role in easing strains caused by the modernization of their country. Study of one nun, one community of nuns, and the umbrella organization that unites nuns across the country allows me to define the new role clearly, to outline its benefits and drawbacks for the women themselves and for the people around them, and to examine broader related issues of religion and modernization, meditation and religious development, power in ambiguity in Southeast Asian societies, and gift-giving in Buddhism. Using biography, I clarify some of the challenges and methods of meeting those challenges used by Thai nuns and bring to life aspects of the reflexivity of private religious experiences and public service. Analyzing the community and national organizations of nuns in light of the unique but in some ways typical life of this one nun reveals the larger picture not only of the nuns' current state but of their future. Among other questions, I ask, What are the obligations of a contemplative to modern society? Why, in a country where the private, contemplative aspect of Buddhism is so respected and revered, do so many Buddhist nuns choose to devote their lives to the improvement of the physical, educational, as well as spiritual aspects of the lives of those around them? How does a person's meditation practice contribute to her understanding of herself and her place in society? How do nuns balance the calls of solitary introspection and of social service? |
