| 摘要 | Christianity was brought to Myanmar encased in Western culture. No attempt was made to unpack the Western culture from the Gospel and repack it with Burmese culture. The Gospel could be compared to meat cooked in the Western way with Western ingredients. When given to the Burmese it tasted strange to them and many refused to eat it. The meat of the Gospel should have been cooked in the Burmese way with Burmese ingredients and many Burmese would eat it. My dissertation provides suggestions on how the Gospel can be contextualized into the Burmese context so that the Burmese will find the Gospel relevant to their life and culture. There are five chapters in my dissertation. The first chapter gives some basic information about the Burmese people: their history, their civilization and culture. In our effort on contextualization we need to know the Burmese people; only then will we know how to contextualize the Gospel. The second chapter has an overview of Theravada Buddhism in Myanmar. Buddhism is different in each country and we need to know the particular form of Buddhism in Myanmar in order to discover the entry points for the Gospel. The third chapter presents a number of concrete illustrations of how the Gospel was unintentionally miscommunicated because it was not contextualized. These illustrations will help us to avoid further miscommunication. The fourth chapter provides us with the theory and foundation of contextualization which will help us in our efforts to contextualize the Gospel in Myanmar. The fifth chapter explores the many possibilities of contextualizing the Gospel for the Burmese people. In this final chapter we examine the possibilities of contextualizing the lifestyles of Burmese Christians, of Christian worship, of the evangelistic methodologies and of the Christian message in Myanmar. We believe that contextualization is very important for the Burmese Churches and we pray for God's guidance in our efforts on contextualization of the Gospel in Myanmar. |
