| 摘要 | This thesis investigates the life of famed evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. The introduction examines several previous works; answers why certain fields of history have dismissed or ignored her, and proposes that McPherson may have suffered from a mood disorder beginning in adolescence. The study begins with her early years in Canada, then her 1918 move to California, naming that as her most fateful career decision. It discusses southern California in 1918, and why the social, economic, religious, and political landscape of post-World War I Los Angeles was ripe for someone of Aimee Semple McPherson's considerable talents. It details the most controversial public event in her life, her 1926 disappearance, and how suggested mood disorder may have contributed to it and to later dramatic events in her life. The conclusion discusses Mrs. McPherson's philanthropic work in southern California, and her long-term contributions to the empire of evangelism she founded. |
