| 摘要 | Belief in the Eleven-headed Avalokitesvara (Ekadasamukha Avalokitesvara) originated in India no later than the fifth or sixth century. Founded in the cosmological aspects of Avalokitesvara, the eleven-headed manifestation of this deity came to epitomize the soteriological nature of the Bodhisattva in the seventh, eighth, and ninth centuries in China and Japan. This study comprises an analysis of the sculpture and ceremonial practices of the cult of the Eleven-headed Avalokitesvara, along with the popular folklore that came to accompany this material. The first chapter is an overview of this tradition in China and Japan. Subsequent chapters are arranged chronologically, alternating between China and Japan, and deal with the patronage of the cult, the development of the cult statuary and its importance to Chinese and Japanese Buddhist sculpture, and the performance and significance of the ceremonial ritual in each period. The dissertation is based on my original translations of the Ekadasamukha-dharan(')i('-)sutra and an eighth century Chinese commentary to the sutra, as well as a firsthand study of the extant cult imagery that survives primarily in Japan. Other primary sources consulted include a transcription of the Eleven-headed Avalokitesvara Rites of Repentence Ceremony that has been held annually at the Nigatsu-do at Todai-ji in Nara, Japan since its initiation in 752 A.D., and collections of Chinese and Japanese miracle stories and folk legends from the seventh and eighth centuries. All pertinent contemporary published works in Chinese and Japanese were also taken into consideration, along with secondary sources from the United States and Europe. |
