| 摘要 | According to the work of Donald Winnicott, environmental failure occurs when there is a lack of good enough mothering. Children in a variety of situations may learn to comply with the demands of these failing environments and form what is known as a false self, in which large parts of the self are suppressed, either consciously or unconsciously. As a result, children may end up taking care of their parents in an emotional sense, despite intentions to the contrary. Research, clinical work, and many theories help to explain how this can occur, but also how environmental failure may have a generational impact that perpetuates this phenomenon. More subtle failures to provide good enough mothering are explored, particularly in the context of Buddhist ideology. Environmental failure and the formation of the false self is viewed as stemming from a failure to be in the moment with the child, and the myriad reasons for this type of failure are explored. It is hoped that, by refocusing on the parent-child interaction with such new perspectives, that parents can learn to develop a relationship with the self in order to have a more complete, open, and helpful relationship with the child. Ultimately, if the mother can tolerate her own feelings, as well as those of her child, she will be able to let her child grow and develop, even if this means being left behind. |
