| 摘要 | This thesis analyzes the portrayal of dance postures called karan[dotbelow]as or "coordinated postures of the arms and legs" in early Buddhist reliefs from the second century BC to the third century AD. Even though dance researchers such as Kapila Vatsyayan claim that reliefs prior to the fifth century cannot be identified as karan[dotbelow]a postures, this investigation develops a contextual methodology for the identification of karan[dotbelow]a postures in early Buddhist art. This approach is based upon the recognition of five different visual conventions: (1) the dancer, (2) the representational style, (3) the narrative technique, (4) the dance movement, and (5) the dance scene. By distinguishing these five elements in early Buddhist reliefs, this study uncovers not only the representation of karan[dotbelow]as as early as the second century BC, but also the different styles of dance that existed in this early Buddhist tradition. |
