| 摘要 | The contemporary field of Buddhist Studies has produced little research on the content and method of the Buddha's instruction to laypersons. The literature which does exist does not inspire confidence in what it has to say about who the Buddhist laity were, what the Buddha taught them, and the methods he used to teach them. Furthermore, most recent scholarship dealing with the Pali texts provides no discussion of the levels of religious attainment accessible to laypeople. This dissertation employs a twofold method to generate some of that information. It undertakes first a descriptive analysis of the Pali Majjhima Nikaya and follows this with a statistical organization of the textual material concerning the canonical lay groups whom the Buddha instructed. After a preliminary systematic discussion of social groups in the Tipitaka, this essay examines the content of the Buddha's lay teaching in the Majjhima Nikaya. Subsequently this work isolates, categorizes and statistically analyzes the methods used by the Buddha in his instruction of the laity. In the section on methods the term "mentoring" is advocated as a precise and textually-compatible term for the Buddha's teaching method. The reactions to and social outcomes from the Buddha's "mentoring" elucidates a framework of religious attainment for the laity. The Buddha of the Majjhima is found to have presented to the laity a comprehensive survey of both philosophical and practical concepts. He was also shown to be a creative and versatile mentor who used at least ten different methods of instruction and supplemented these with eight different rhetorical styles. Each of these methods and styles is analyzed for frequency of use in reference to specific social groups. One-fourth of the tutorials resulted from the Buddha's missionary efforts. The reactions of the Majjhima laity to the Buddha's instruction displayed a very high incidence of attainment of "stream-entry" (sotapatti) with eventual perfection (arahantship) in over ten percent of the cases studied. The outcome for more than half of those tutored by the Buddha was that they became lay followers (upasaka). |
