| 摘要 | The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of the conflicts experienced by some westerners involved in Buddhist practices emphasizing selflessness. Twelve individuals between the ages of 23 to 45 who identified themselves as having experienced a significant conflict between their Buddhist practice and other goals or desires in life were interviewed individually in interviews lasting from 45 to 90 minutes. The phenomenological hermeneutical method was used, in which implicit meanings in participants' descriptions were made explicit and then interpreted according to the specific interpretive frames of psychoanalytic theory and transpersonal psychology. The majority of the conflicts were found to relate in some way to desire, which became an occasion for conflict because Buddhism was perceived as encouraging the renunciation of or suppression of desire. The application of psychoanalytic and transpersonal interpretive frames to the data indicated that many of these "spiritual" conflicts were likely to also involve psychological issues such as neurotic detachment, conflicts involving sexuality, tendencies towards excessive self-criticism, difficulties acknowledging and expressing anger, difficulties with assertiveness, self-esteem issues, and psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder. Of particular relevance in the analysis was the transpersonal author Welwood's (2000) concept of "spiritual bypass", which refers to the use of a spiritual teaching or practice to rationalize, or avoid acknowledging, psychological difficulties or problems. The implications of this research included the following: (a) that "spiritual bypass" and other problems and conflicts associated with Buddhist practice are vital issues in the lives of those affected, and may result in significant impairments in functioning and well being if they are not resolved; (b) the application of psychoanalytic theory to these issues by therapists, such as Rubin (1996, 1999) and Epstein (1990, 1995), who are sympathetic to Buddhist practice, maybe an especially suitable way to understand and address these issues. |
