| 摘要 | The intent of this thesis is to provide an historical and philosophical context of 126th Chapter of Zhu Xi's (1130-1200) Zhuzi Yulei, titled "The Buddhists" (shishi). Of particular interest are the philosophical critiques presented by Zhu Xi, for his critiques seem to have stressed that the difference between Confucianism and Buddhism is found in metaphysics, not merely in ethics. Because the chapter has not been translated in its entirety into a Western language, this thesis provides a complete translation of the chapter and thus gives the reader a foundation for a more thorough investigation of many of the specific arguments made by Zhu Xi and for a better understanding of the various issues discussed in the critique. A complete translation will aid one to see the complexity and scope of Zhu Xi's critique and to demonstrate that he does succeed in his goal, which is to present a Confucian metaphysical system that can compete with the Buddhist metaphysical system. |
