| 摘要 | Elisa` ben Semuel's Sahzadeh va Sufi or "The Prince and the Sufi," is mentioned in practically every published survey of JP literature. It has been recognized as a major JP work as well as an important branch in the genealogical tree of Buddha biographies; yet no critical edition of it or any of Ben Semuel's works has been produced to date. What follows is an examination of the 17th century poet and his works with a detailed study of his most important JP literary contribution. The study begins with a broad historical survey of Jewish life in Iran, from the origins of settlement to the Islamization of Iran by the Arabs, through to the institutionalization of Shi`a Islam in the 16th century. A general explanation of Judeo-Persian and brief account of the beginnings of JP studies, including the scholars who first studied Elisa` ben Semuel's works, is also provided. The study presents the poet's life, time and works. Attention is then focused on Sahzadeh va Sufi , including an evaluation of different renditions of the Buddha biographies and the JP adaptation's immediate Hebrew source. The dissertation is not, however, a comparative study; rather, I treat the JP composition as a distinct literary work with its own approach and objectives. Although adaptations of the Buddha stories adhere to a general framework, they have undergone layered transformations and contain features and sources specifically relevant to their times and cultural milieu. This is well reflected in the language, genre and themes of the composition, which draws from Jewish, Iranian, Persian-Islamic as well as JP sources. The remainder of the dissertation is devoted to a critical edition and collation of the preface, introductory sections and the first fifteen chapters of the JP text, followed by an annotated translation of the same. |
