| 摘要 | 加里·斯奈德(Gary Snyder, 1930——)生於舊金山,在俄勒岡州和華盛頓州的小農場長大。他的生活經歷幾乎包羅萬象。他在里德學院時攻讀文學和人類學,其間,他生活在印第安人的部落;1951年入印第安納大學研修語言學研究生課程,1953年轉入加州大學伯克利分校,師從陳世驤學習東方語言、哲學和文化並畢業於中國古典文學專業。他當過水手、伐木工、森林測量員,五十年代早期開始寫詩,六十年代中期曾到日本習禪,對佛教禪宗有深入獨到的研究。1968年,他攜帶日本妻子回到美國加州西部的山區定居,栽培果樹、養蜂、養雞,過著“返回大自然”的生活。1970年,斯奈德和他的日本妻子組織了一個地方性的佛學團體,定期舉行諸如坐禪、講經等佛學活動。他對東方文化有著奇特而濃厚的興趣,因翻譯中國唐朝詩僧寒山的詩而出名。在學習東方文化,把中國、日本古詩的情致熔入創作這方面,斯奈德在學術界被公認為美國詩人中成就最高的一位,因為他不限于在形式上模仿,而且在思想與生活上接受了東方哲學的影響。斯奈德是一位出色的生態詩人,他教人們怎樣去觀察大自然,怎樣去觀察大自然中的人類。他追求同大自然的統一,關心文明和進步造成的... Gary Snyder was born in 1930 in San Francisco. By the age of 25 he had begun to write mature poems in a form recognizably his own. Since the 1960s, critics have increasingly analyzed and praised Snyder’s work. In 1975 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Turtle Island (published in 1974), and in 1987 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
