| 摘要 | In this Thesis the main objectives are set forth to philosophically analyze and criticize the Theravada Buddhist concept of 'Contentment' (Santutthi), which appeared in the Tipitakas, in order to grasp its real meaning and significance ; to search for the methods of applying it in daily life and in the present society for the sake of the highest happiness ; and to remove the existing misunderstanding of the Santutthi as it delays the national economic progress, makes people lazy and finally does not support the national developments. From the study of the Tipitaka it is found that a person who lacks of 'contentment' (Santutthi) always faces the economic crisis. The 'Santutthi' is none other than 'self-control' or 'self-contentment', which is regarded as the intrinsic nature of human mind; it cannot be obtained from any other places, it cannot be given by others but it can be created in the mind by anyone only. If one does not know how to create it and how to use it, them it will result in encountering with the economic problem, because one will fall a victim of one's own craving, which is the root cause of all problems in life. Buddhism holds that man can develop himself, can solve his own problem by himself, and he even can help solve the problem of society. This can be done by developing his mind first. When his mind is developed, he can solve the problems outside the mind. Those problems may be ranged from small ones to big ones. When the mental problems are solved, the physical problems which mean the economical and environmental problems will also be solved accordingly. In Buddhism, life is divided into two levels, namely, mundane level, which is the life of lay people, is confined to the social nor and tradition, it must eventually consent to and acknowledge the economical system created by the society, supra mundane level, which is the life of monk, is not confined to the society and any economical systems. Monks do not worry about their living earning like laymen, they cannot do any business and their lives are not concerned with the economical activities like those of laymen. If they have to deal with those things, they would not do for their own sake but for the sake of happiness of all fellow-beings, for spiritual development, and for enhancing the quality of life according to the Buddha's teachings. The Buddha preached the doctrine of 'contentment' for both levels of life. Buddhism emphasizes on solving the inner problems first and then the outer ones. Man's mind is always under the influences of greed, hate and delusion, which are the root causes of the inner and outer problems. All the problems arise because of these three defilements. We must try to get rid of these defilements, which are the inner problems. At least, Santutthi or Santosa (Contentment), which is opposite to the greed and if it is well understood, gradually accumulated and properly applied in daily life by the Buddhists, can help solve the economical problems. By this way, one will be free from both mental or inner and physical or outer problems. When the economical problem is solved, life will be happy, one can live the perfect life, because mind similar with man and body with society are closely related. Therefore, Santutthi Dhamma is more essential and necessary for the present Thai society forever. |
