| 摘要 | This thesis is an attempt to study some aspects of the life of Visakha, the great Upasika, with emphasis on the contribution she had made for society and the patronage she had done to Buddhism. The result of the research work can be summed up into two categories : 1. The Contribution to Society : In dealing with various persons in the society, Visakha' role was great due to two aspects : a. Family Background ; she was born in a wealthy family, surrounded by good environments. She was gifted with a good brain and intelligence. She was beloved to every body, e.g., parents, relatives as well as all subordinates. Having brought up amid the circle of learned people gives her a chance of being developed. Most importantly, she had attained Sotapanna (Stream-Enterer) since her childhood at the presence of the Lord Buddha. b. Social Status : She was accepted and adored by the people from all walks of life in all places. She was an exemplified person in behavior and moral conduct. She knew very well about what to do in dealing with different societies. In her distinct role of donation, she set herself as a good example, i.e., she inspired others by her action. She had devoted her time and strength in doing good for the society for her entire life. 2. Her role as a patron to Buddhism : As a Buddhist, Visakha had done a good deal of support to Buddhism since her childhood. She had initiated offering the fore appropriate necessities to monks e.g. porridge for breakfast, Bubpharam Monastery, medicines and bathing robes. Her exemplified actions become a model of the offering for all lay Buddhists by giving, upholding the precepts and doing meditation. Furthermore, she was wise and capable one in dealing with some monks who behave improperly. For instance, with the attitude of loving-kindness and skillful in speaking. She had brought back Udayi, the stubborn monk, on the right track, causing good results to the monks as well as Buddhism at large. Visakha was the prominent Buddhist, shining amid the non-Buddhist faiths. She took the role of missionary and convinced them into Buddhism. Among them, it is her own father-in-law, the millionaire Migara. She was the best in treat the people of all levels, therefore she was venerated and accepted by all. It is important for us to learn and realize how some model of good life played by Visakha, the great Upasika, can be applied in our modern society, e.g., how can we go good to our family and society as Visakha did, how can we fulfill our obligations that faithful Buddhists should do to the Triple Gems as Visakha did. As Visakha herself said, "Throughout of my life, I will be never ever abstained from doing service to the Bhikkhu-Sangha". |
