| 摘要 | The purpose of the present thesis is to study what impact the non-observance of Buddhist Fifth Precept (abstention from intoxicants) has on the Thai Society as well as, from the Buddhist viewpoint, to recommend the way to remedy the situation. The research can be summarized into four headings, namely :- (1) Intoxicants mean any kind of intake, including, of course, alcoholic drinks, which intoxicants as well as makes its consumers addicted. Such intoxicants as are prevalent in Thailand are of various kinds. (2) Motivation to succumb to intoxicants springs from two causes : (A) Internal cause originating from, according to Buddhist psychoanalysis, greed, anger and delusion. All these three defilement spring from ignorance. (B) External cause originating from social seducements leading to wrong desire and attachment. (3) Impact on society and causing social problems that are taking a heavy toll of the country's law and moral order. This impact can be classified into two categories : 1) Individually : A) Loss of mental capability, deterioration in physical and mental health, dissipation of wealth, contact of illness, and above all, fool handiness in doing evils. B) According to Buddhist teachings, intoxicant addicts, when dead, are condemned to life in hells. And should ever they be reborn again in human form, the best that can be expected of them is that they are mentally unfit. 2) Socially : Owing to the epidemic nature of the spread of all forms of intoxicant intakes, particularly among the youth, there is a fast and growing fear that health of the young in the country will go down from bad to worse. Already there is a sharp rise in the crime rate across the nation. (4) Buddhist ways of remedying the situation. Abstention from intoxicant intake is one of the Five precepts (Panca sila) the observance of which is obligatory to every follower of Buddhism. This is a matter of critical reflection (Yonisomanasikara) and is to be decided upon by oneself. The evils of any kind of toxicants, be it in the form of powder, liquid or solid, are too well-known to emphasize. The harm the consumers and the addicted both physically and mentally and are too be avoided at all costs. Buddhism, among all religions, lay great emphasis on all evils, physical as well as mental. "Do good, Avoid evil, Purify your mind. This is the Buddha's Teaching." |
