| 摘要 | This thesis is aimed to an analytical study of the occultism and Buddhism according to the viewpoint of Venerable Phra Dhammapitaka (Prayudh Payutto). The objective is to study of the concept of occultism, the relation between occultism and Buddhism, and the effect of beliefs which effects to Buddhism. The study has been based on documentary sources, that is, Tipitakas and their translations, commentary texts, research works, and other reference books concerned, specially, the academic works written by Venerable Phra Dhammapitaka (Prayudh Payutto). From the study, it is found that 'Occultism' is a kind of unprovable faith, e.g., belief in magic power, spell, supernatural power. In other words, it means belief in some outsider power with the hope that some mysterious power may grant the helping hands. Anyway such occultism is rooted from hymn in Veda. It is further found that occultism cannot be proved its effectiveness. To surrender oneself to occultism produces limited result. More importantly, it can't bring us to the cessation of sufferings. Occultism might bring us to only the final realm of its. i.e., lokiya- abiññā (worldling knowledge) Buddhism, on the other hand, is the teachings of the Lord Buddha as whole. In this thesis, however, the term Buddhism means the main theme of the Buddha's teachings derived from his enlightenment. According to that, Buddhism is a religion of action (kiriyav?da or kammav?da). It is to teach that we are the products of our own action. We can reach the final freedom or release from suffering by ourselves with our own wisdom. The arising of Buddhism is to declare freedom to all mankinds, on the basic principle that all human beings are trainable or capable one to be developed. The method of training or developing was called Trisikkh? (Sikkh?ttaya : Threefold Trainings) i.e. morality (S?la) Concentration (Sam?dhi) and Wisdom (Pann?). By this method of training, human beings can attain the realization of Truth, that is, to realize the Paticcasamupp?da or the inter-relation of all things concerning with ourselves, our society and environment around us as whole. In other words, it is the freedom or extinction of sufferings. According to venarable Phra Dhammapitaka, occultism is the blind faith in outsider or supernatural power. It is the inclination to surrender oneself to some mysterious power outside. Even though Phra Thammapitaka does not deny or confirm directly about existence of occultism, he still not supports anyone to be get involved in proving whether or not occultism is. On the contrary, he points out shortcomings the occultism has. That is to say that even attainment of superpower is the realms of world lings, never be the way of extinction of sufferings. He further shows clearly how and what the Buddhadhamma is. Wishing to provide the chance of upgrade their spirit, to human beings and to guide them to the true Buddhism, Phra Dhammapitaka has pointed out the distinction between the two and where the spot of turning point. To do so, he has suggested : 1) To change the direction of faith from outsider power (occultism) to Buddhism by beginning with Triple Gems, the starting point of development in Buddhism. 2) If people still believe in Triple Gems in the way of occultism, just try to persuade their beliefs in the way of supporting the doctrine of action. i.e. give them moral supports to do the further good. Buddhism emphasizes very much on education or training. Without proper education, human beings miss the chance of self-development. Therefore, to develop human resource, it needs time and continuation. As a matter of fact, due to many factors, it is very difficult to make all developed equally, this is why the blind faith in occultism still remains. |
