Aim of this research is to understand how Buddhist monastic transform from secular life to monastic life and the meaning of life gained in the process. Literature search, participatory observation and field interviews are the three research methods employed to study how sur-mundane mindset influence the cultivation and fulfillment of Fo Guang monastic. This research is divided into two parts:literature search and field study. Chapter two explores the philosophical origin of Fo Guang Shan Monastic Order. As it is of Lin-Chi Zen Lineage, this can be achieved from the understanding of life of the Buddha and the first Sangha, together with Chinese Zen Practice and the respective monastic system. From the information we gathered, we generalized three ideal types as the basis of Chinese Monastic practice. Second part of the research, firstly employs literature search and participatory research to understand the spirit and systems in Fo Guang Monastic Order. We compared the sectarian mode、work ethics、standards of conduct、disciplinary standards of FGS, spirit, ideal of a Fo Guang Buddhists and FGS’s contribution to society, the decision making machine, administration structure, personnel policies and economic policies of FGS monastic order, with the basic teachings of the Buddha and the ideals of the traditional Ch’an forest monasteries in China. We witnessed that these basic Buddhist teachings form important theoretical foundations of Fo Guang Monastic Order. In addition, we realize quality of life is the quality of our soul and from the realization and practice of work ethics and disciplinary standards, monastic not only purify karma but also cultivate the mentality of selflessness and having the success of the organization as their mission in life. Next part of our field work is researcher’s participation in the monastery and the experience reported by 21 FGS monastic members with 20 to 40 year monastic experience. From the results of this field work, in chapter 4 of this thesis, we analyzed how the spirit of the Buddha and ideals of the sangha affect the cultivation and fulfillment of its member’s lives. We found that the cultivation of a FGS monastic requires a long maturation period with countless life challenges; moreover, it is a life-long multidimensional education process. The interviewees in this research experienced the virtue of life and developed tenacity through discipline in their lives and work in dharma preaching. In addition, the analysis of their responses revealed that a selfless service-oriented bodhi citta is at the heart of FGS monastic life experience. In conclusion, a sur-mundane meaning of life is to propagate dharma, the motivation to improve quality of life should come out of transforming life challenges and the value of life lies in following the humanistic Buddhist thought, austerity of the first sanga, sectarian plan of seeing the community as oneself and enriching life with consistent giving. Therefore, sur-mundane and worldly realization of life is to see for the merge of these two life perceptions in mid-path so that between picki |
