Symbolism Within Religious Architecture Symbolism is a crucial aspect within religion. Religious literatures, behaviors, rituals, architectures and artifacts all have been presented as symbolic subjects or objects. Maybe it is because Chinese is heavily rely on symbolism, architecture of Buddhism have been formalized with very strict order. The layout of temple, artifacts, monks’ activities and pilgrims’ routes all reflect some aspects of Buddhism’s philosophies and discourses. These reflections later become rituals and orders. In modern architecture, religious buildings do not necessary conform to the tradition. In an age of information, religious programs sometimes have unconventional requirements. Therefore it is quite common for religious buildings to have diverse appearance, materials usages and constructions techniques. However beside all the obvious transformations, one aspect in religious architecture that never changed or being debated is the design methodology of symbolism. Is it an absolute formula to apply symbolism to create prototypical spaces every time when designing a religious building? Linguistic Deconstruction of Zen Case Studies There is no truth behind symbols. Behind the meanings of language we can not find the absolute truth as well. Dialogues in Zen case studies are not only mere presentations of their viewpoints to life and universe, but more importantly they attempt to break the confinement within people’s thinking, hence reaching the state of Nirvana. Buddhism differs from other religions and can be interpreted as a form of philosophy. Zen case studies advocates the absence of true objectivism, the evanescent of constant truth, multiple meanings within symbols, it can be understand as Deconstructivism. Analysis a of Zen case studies and their applications on design process can be an effective tool to explore new reflections and discussions between symbolic relationship between religion and its buildings. |
