Recently as the chaos from external environment increase, the life pressures of general publics increase as well. It seems that humans want to pursue the quiet senses of relaxation. Therefore, within the design area, a sense of Zen trend was gradually getting more and more popular. Human internal needs were viewed as the primary design focus. It is the researcher’s attempts to transform the internal cultural senses into external concrete representation. It is hoped that the future products can not only go beyond functionalism, but also promote the needs to spiritual level. This study first investigates relevant literatures regarding Zen culture, cultural image transformation, and the model how culture embedded in design application. Based on the analysis of design cases, and the realization a transformation and extension of Zen culture, the working model of how culture can be incorporated in the design process. The purpose of pilot test before the experiment is to investigate the factors between Zen culture and product design. In addition, by collecting the real world products, such as eating utensils (E.g., Bowl), the forms, color, materials, and graphics were explored to help associate with the Zen culture. The research outcomes reveal that: 1.Metaphysic: It has the spirits of “I am not existing.”, “self consciousness, awareness towards others, awareness in action” , “do nothing is something to do” and “perfect senses”. 2.Lifestyle: It has the concepts of “not to kill,” “health,” “based on the faith,” “environmental protection,” “economic factors,” and “convenient.” Therefore, it can provide us a sense of back to the nature and clean body. We can have the life style of “pursuing relaxation and satisfaction of body, mind, and spirit,” “unearthliness,” “good temper,” and “calm.” 3.The most represented sample was obtained from the pilot test. After controlling the design variables, it was created by using 3D computer simulation. A total of 14 samples were related to the form, 12 samples were related to the color, 7 samples were related to texture, and 4 samples were associated with graphics. The comparisons were conducted by using two design variables each time. 4.Materialism: After the research results were summarized, it is found that round form were viewed as with the most Zen visual image. Dark color series, low brightness, low saturation or soft grey might be viewed as with Zen’s calm, pure, unearthliness or naïve visual images. Ceramic or bright materials might result in Zen’s quiet or bright visual images. Wooden textures might result in Zen’s natural visual images. In addition, the overall aesthetics, technology, value, usefulness, and textures are all important design factors that need to be considered carefully. |
