The author's descriptions of the years he spent training with a herbal medicine specialist, acupuncturist, and a near mythical hermit called "Fourth Uncle" take up most of the book. However the volume also contains a wealth of information about Vietnamese culture and history, about popular beliefs in spirits, sorcery, martial arts, and about Thau's form of Buddhism, known as Buu Son Ky Huong.
