| 摘要 | The article presents information on a research conducted by Cristina Rocha, a Brazilian anthropologist, on religion in Brazil. Brazil has the world's largest population of Roman Catholics. But that majority blends with a host of other faiths, among them a major Pentecostal movement, Afro-Brazilian sects such as Candomble, and Kardecist Spiritism. Cristina notes that Brazilians are accustomed to a "creolized" mixture of traditions. The "discourse of modernity" led a sector of Brazilians to adopt Zen as a sign of being modern. Since 1908 Japanese immigrants and their descendants had brought Buddhism to Brazil, including those who nominally converted to Catholicism. |
